HEAD OF SOFTWARE FOR RARE LTD.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage all Lead Software Engineers (game projects and shared technology groups); this includes mentoring, handling appraisals and helping to build strong technical teams rather than directing day-to-day work.
  • Own the recruitment strategy for the software group to ensure we have the talent and resources needed to complete current and future projects.
  • Oversee engineer staffing decisions to ensure that software teams function as efficiently as possible given the resources across the entire studio.
  • Represent the interests and needs of the software group, and provide technical information and insight during studio decision making and planning within the Senior Management Team.
  • Work closely with the Heads of Art and Production to ensure that all Rare titles are of the highest possible quality and delivered on time and budget.
  • Promote and structure ongoing professional development for software engineers.
  • Promote and facilitate good communication between different software teams across the studio to create and maintain a healthy software development 'community' and establish and share 'best practices' for engineering excellence.
  • Perform technical due diligence with the game teams at Rare to understand and guide their risks and work with external partners to do due diligence with them as required.
  • Sign off on the quarterly technical roadmap planning conducted by the Lead Software group.
  • Be the principal technical point of contact for any and all external parties, including the rest of Microsoft but also middleware providers.
  • Represent Rare as part of the MGS Studio Development Managers group.
  • Represent Rare as part of the world-wide development community, e.g. GDC.
  • Liaise with IEB teams in Europe and Redmond; this will involve travel as required.
