16/10/07: Rare Live, Minus Brian May

In recent years Rare has striven to shed some of its infamous layers of secrecy, appearing at industry talks, panels and so on. And you won't be able to throw a rock without hitting a Rare rep in late October.

Firstly, Rare and Microsoft are holding their own event as part of Nottingham's GameCity 2007 festival: Freeplay Lounge will take place on October 25th at a city centre bar called Bluu. Click the image above to see the full flyer, but the main draws are free entry, free food, free Xbox 360 gaming and a selection of Rare staff on hand for the dual purposes of taking you on in multiplayer and enduring your drunken verbal abuse. That starts at 7pm, but at 11am on the same day our own Ryan Stevenson will present 'Visual Style and the Creative Spark', a talk about the art of Viva Piñata (see here).

The London Games Festival runs during the same time period, so while some Rare bods live it up in Nottingham, others will be holding forth on topics close to their hearts down in the capital. Nick Burton and Steve Brand are both set to offer game-related talks; Nick's 'Retro Revisited: Reinventing the Past for the Modern Gamer' (Tuesday 23rd, 11.15am - here) focuses mainly on Jetpac Refuelled, while Steve elaborates on his experiences as a Producer - largely on Viva Piñata - in 'Never Work with Children or Piñata: A Potted History of One Producer's Experience of the Video Game Industry' (Thursday 25th, again at 11.15am - here).

Meanwhile, as part of the associated London Game Career Fair, Nick will head up a session entitled 'A Career in Software Development' on Tuesday 23rd at 2pm, with Rare Animation Supervisor and Voice of Leafos Louise Ridgeway following on Wednesday 24th at 2pm with 'A Career in Animation'. Head of Rare's Art Asset Group Steve McFarlane will also be on hand to offer professional portfolio assessments over the course of the two days, so bring along your own if you feel confident, or if you just want to hear his melodious Black Country tones.

The Rare contingent looks forward to meeting and/or entertaining you at any of these events, unless you'd intended to come armed or throw stuff, in which case steer clear.
